Bahamian Slang at Mall at Marathon | Stuffy Riders with special guest Bobby Shmurda

What Is a “Pot Cake” in The Bahamas? (Episode 30 with Bobby Shmurda)

In New York they say “stray dogs,” but in The Bahamas we say Pot Cake 🐕—and it’s more than a nickname. In Episode 30 of the Bahamian Slang Podcast, filmed onsite at Stuffy Riders, Mall at Marathon (part of our RickyLuv Family Fun Day Tour), special guest Bobby Shmurda and I break down the meaning, the history, and why this word lives deep in Bahamian culture.

Why Do We Call Them “Pot Cakes”?

The name comes from our food traditions—when families scraped the “cake” of rice from the bottom of the pot and fed it to the dogs. The dogs became “pot cakes,” and the slang stuck. Today it’s everyday Bahamian vocabulary, just like “sip sip” (gossip) or “sweet up” (butter up).

Pot Cake vs. “Stray Dog” (NYC vs. Nassau)

With Bobby Shmurda, we had a good laugh comparing how New Yorkers say “stray,” while here it’s “pot cake.” Same dog, different culture. In Nassau, you’ll spot pot cakes roaming neighborhoods, chilling by the beach, and becoming part of the island story—resilient, smart, and full of personality.
